During the program we addressed Coaching Strategies.  In addition to the Oreo Model shared above, we reviewed a Carnegie Coaching Model.  This strategy that I created blends five of Mr. Carnegie’s human relation principles to help coach someone towards a change.  If you are familiar with 360° feedback, then consider this as 360° coaching.  This strategy can be used w/ peers, supervisors or subordinates.  The key is to be sincere, calm & professional.

  • Use the person’s name.
  • Give honest, sincere appreciation.
  • Make the fault seem easy to correct.
  • When you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically.
  • Appeal to their nobler motives.

Who is the person you would like to identify for a coaching opportunity?  What is your first step and outcome desired?  I encourage you to write down what you want to say and practice it out loud, that way you can see how it sounds.  Invest time for courageous conversations through a coaching dialogue and you will begin to see relationships and performance improve.
